SPCA of Texas Kicks Off New 4-H Homes for Horses Program

(DALLAS, TX); September 29, 2021 – The SPCA of Texas is excited to announce its participation in a new program connecting 4-H students with horses, which officially kicked off with an event taking place on September 11-12, 2021. The 4-H Homes for Horses program, in partnership with Texas A&M, Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) and The Right Horse Initiative, pairs 4-H youth with horses from rescue organizations in order to provide the horses with ongoing care while teaching the students valuable skills.

Seventeen students applied, submitted, interviewed, were excepted into the program and were then paired off with their own rescue horse for a full year. The students will take the horse home with them, work on their skills as well as the horse's skills. The students are required to submit updates and videos/journal entries monthly during their year to monitor progress. At the end of the year, the students are able to show off their accomplishments in the year-end State 4H Show with the opportunities to win scholarships.

Participants in the program met at the HSNT Equine campus in Joshua, TX the weekend of September 11-12. The meet and greet weekend was run by a team from Texas A&M who led the kids through educational seminars, both instructional and hands-on. During this weekend, the students were able to meet their new equine partners and get to know them, and then take them home at the end of the weekend.

The SPCA of Texas is thrilled to be a part of this innovative program that benefits not only the horses needing homes, but also students interested in learning more about equine care and training. To learn more about the program, please visit

"I'm absolutely in LOVE with Kitty (formerly Kaleigh). I know her name isn't original at all but I just started calling her that until I could think of a name and it just stuck - it's so her! I've attached two photos - she's seriously the most beautiful kitty in the world! She loves to steal tennis balls and bones from her dog sister - she thinks she's a dog! She enjoys going for walks and car rides, snuggling with mom, bird watching, drinking from the sink, playing with her pipe cleaners and getting into mom's makeup in the mornings. I couldn't 'imagine life without her. She's the absolute best!"
