Alternative Holiday Gifts

The SPCA has gift certificates available for our adoption centers and our clinics.  Gift certificates can be purchased to put toward the adoption of a pet or toward vaccinations or microchipping a pet. You can stop by your local SPCA of Texas facility to get your gift certificate.

Why shouldn't you give a pet to someone as a gift?

  • Holidays are a stressful time without adding a new personality to the mix.
  • Animals are a responsibility you have given someone a 15-year responsibility and something that, over time, will cost thousands of dollars to care for. Animal ownership is not something to be entered into lightly and should not be given as a surprise.
  • Personalities and schedules may not fit well and animals are a hard gift to return

What are some alternatives to a pet that are animal-related?

SPCA of Texas Voices

"I'm absolutely in LOVE with Kitty (formerly Kaleigh). I know her name isn't original at all but I just started calling her that until I could think of a name and it just stuck - it's so her! I've attached two photos - she's seriously the most beautiful kitty in the world! She loves to steal tennis balls and bones from her dog sister - she thinks she's a dog! She enjoys going for walks and car rides, snuggling with mom, bird watching, drinking from the sink, playing with her pipe cleaners and getting into mom's makeup in the mornings. I couldn't 'imagine life without her. She's the absolute best!"
