SPCA of Texas Assists in Seizing 315 Fighting Roosters, Hens and Juvenile Birds from Angelina County Cockfight
On Saturday, April 25, 2015, the SPCA of Texas, the Angelina County Sheriff's Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigations seized and took custody of 315 fighting roosters, hens and juvenile birds on Saturday, April 25 from an Angelina County cockfight. Approximately 20 people were detained at the scene. The SPCA of Texas transported the birds to a secure location this evening. The SPCA of Texas will care for the fowl until the custody hearing takes place.

The custody hearing for the birds is scheduled for Friday, May 1 at 9 a.m. at the Angelina County Court at Law, located at 215 E. Lufkin Ave., Lufkin, TX 75901, Judge Robert Inselmann, Jr. presiding.
Cockfighting is a crime in all 50 states, including Texas, where it is a felony, punishable by up to two years in a state jail and/or up to a $10,000 fine, to cause birds to fight with one another and/or to use property for the purpose of cockfighting. In Texas, it is a Class C Misdemeanor to be a spectator at a cock fight. Federal law also prohibits any interstate or foreign transport of fighting animals.
