SPCA of Texas Receives $25,000 from Maddie's Fund to Support the Shy and Fearful Foster Program

(DALLAS, TX); March 28, 2018
— The SPCA of Texas is thrilled to announce that it has received a generous grant in the amount of $25,000 from Maddie’s Fund, a national family foundation established by Dave and Cheryl Duffield to revolutionize the status and well-being of companion animals, to provide resources for the pilot study of the SPCA of Texas’ new Shy and Fearful Foster Program. This program will specifically focus on animals, brought in through the Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit, that exhibit shy, fearful or anxious behavior.

Historically, most confiscated dogs live in kennels until their case is resolved, which can be many months. Long-term kenneling can be very stressful for dogs. The funding supports implementation and evaluation of this innovative program, where dogs will be fostered in homes where caregivers will follow a structured training plan and monitor the dog’s progress. The goal of the study is to see if foster homes provide a less stressful environment for our particularly fearful dogs to decompress and heal, and evaluate how foster care impacts the dog’s progress. Ultimately, the goal is to get these animals adopted, while not rushing the healing process.

The SPCA of Texas is able to provide exceptional care for these animals thanks to this generous grant from Maddie’s Fund. Without support from foundations and donors like Maddie’s Fund, the SPCA of Texas would not be able to afford a study such as this, which will provide valuable insight regarding the most humane way to foster shy and fearful animals.

"I'm absolutely in LOVE with Kitty (formerly Kaleigh). I know her name isn't original at all but I just started calling her that until I could think of a name and it just stuck - it's so her! I've attached two photos - she's seriously the most beautiful kitty in the world! She loves to steal tennis balls and bones from her dog sister - she thinks she's a dog! She enjoys going for walks and car rides, snuggling with mom, bird watching, drinking from the sink, playing with her pipe cleaners and getting into mom's makeup in the mornings. I couldn't 'imagine life without her. She's the absolute best!"
