SPCA of Texas Seizes 14 Cruelly Treated Dogs from Kaufman County Property

(KAUFMAN COUNTY, TX); July 29, 2016 –This morning, under the authority of the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, the SPCA of Texas seized 14 cruelly treated dogs from a property in Able Springs, TX (near Terrell, TX) in Kaufman County. The dogs included ten adults and four puppies. The dogs were transported to the SPCA of Texas' Emergency Rescue Center in Dallas, where they are being examined by medical staff and will be cared for until the custody hearing.

All of the adult dogs and two of the puppies were found tethered on the property by heavy tow chains to car axles that had been driven into the ground. The remaining two puppies were living inside a feces-filled, urine soaked shed on the property. None of the dogs had access to proper food or water and only a few had dog houses to seek respite from the hot sun. The dogs' living conditions are consistent with the housing of game dogs (fighting dogs).

The animals appear to have varying health issues, including hair loss, flea infestation, sores and other health problems. The flea infestations are so severe on one particular dog that a veterinarian gave on-site IV fluids and a blood transfusion once the dog arrived at the Emergency Rescue Center.

The SPCA of Texas received an anonymous complaint regarding cruelly treated dogs on a property in Kaufman County. The SPCA of Texas Rescue and Investigations team visited the property on Thursday, July 28 and attempted to get in contact with the animal owner. The animal owner was unavailable, and as at least one of the dogs appeared to be in dire need of rescue, the SPCA of Texas and Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office concurred that it was in the animals' best interest to remove them. The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office sought a seizure warrant and the SPCA of Texas took temporary custody of the dogs today.

The custody hearing will be held on Thursday, August 4 at 10 a.m. at the Kaufman County Courthouse located at 3001 S. Washington, Kaufman, TX 75142, Justice of the Peace, Pct. 1, the Honorable Mary Bardin presiding. Criminal charges may be pending.

"I'm absolutely in LOVE with Kitty (formerly Kaleigh). I know her name isn't original at all but I just started calling her that until I could think of a name and it just stuck - it's so her! I've attached two photos - she's seriously the most beautiful kitty in the world! She loves to steal tennis balls and bones from her dog sister - she thinks she's a dog! She enjoys going for walks and car rides, snuggling with mom, bird watching, drinking from the sink, playing with her pipe cleaners and getting into mom's makeup in the mornings. I couldn't 'imagine life without her. She's the absolute best!"
