(DALLAS, TX); April 19, 2017—The SPCA of Texas is excited to announce that it has received more than $120,000 from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America, to implement a key element of the Community Pet Program’s South Dallas Pet Initiative in 2017.  This generous grant will help fund 1,500 spay/neuter surgeries (1,000 dogs and 500 cats), post-surgical pain medication and rabies vaccines to pets of people living in eleven Southern Dallas zip codes. Zip codes include: 75203, 75208, 75210, 75211, 75215, 75216, 75217, 75223, 75224, 75227 and 75241.

A portion of this funding will provide for marketing and advertising support of this spay and neuter campaign.
The goal of the South Dallas Pet Initiative is to provide spay and neuter surgeries within our target communities in order to help keep pets in homes, out of shelters and off the streets. The Community Pet Program’s South Dallas Pet Initiative, which began in 2016, offers these services free of charge to pets of people living in poverty, and where residents have neither the resources nor the access to stem the growth rate of the number of loose dogs.
The specific zip codes were chosen because the region serves as a virtual desert for animal services that help ensure responsible pet ownership. There are only three veterinary clinics for over 400,000 people across the 11 zip codes in South Dallas, including the SPCA of Texas’ Mary Spencer Clinic on Village Fair Drive. According to the Dallas County Community Health Needs Assessment, 25 percent of residents in South Dallas live below the federal poverty line.

The SPCA of Texas is able to provide exceptional care for these animals, and keep them in their loving homes, thanks to this generous grant from PetSmart Charities. Without support from foundations and donors like PetSmart Charities, the SPCA of Texas would not be able to afford the cost of the care for the animals necessary to save lives.

“PetSmart Charities grants are making spay and neuter services more accessible and affordable for pet parents in need across the country,” said David Haworth, DVM, Ph.D., president of PetSmart Charities.  “Through the hard work of the SPCA of Texas, a longtime partner of PetSmart Charities, we hope to reduce the overpopulation of pets and end pet homelessness in Dallas.”

With the help of animal welfare partners, such as SPCA of Texas, PetSmart Charities has funded over 1.4 million spay and neuter surgeries in the U.S. since 2009.

"I'm absolutely in LOVE with Kitty (formerly Kaleigh). I know her name isn't original at all but I just started calling her that until I could think of a name and it just stuck - it's so her! I've attached two photos - she's seriously the most beautiful kitty in the world! She loves to steal tennis balls and bones from her dog sister - she thinks she's a dog! She enjoys going for walks and car rides, snuggling with mom, bird watching, drinking from the sink, playing with her pipe cleaners and getting into mom's makeup in the mornings. I couldn't 'imagine life without her. She's the absolute best!"
