Equine and Livestock
Although people most often associate the SPCA of Texas with dogs and cats, we offer other animals for adoption, such as horses, pigs, sheep, donkeys, ducks, and chickens. All of these adoptable animals can be seen online.
Livestock animals require a separate adoption application (this process is different from adopting a dog, cat or small mammal). You must complete this application before scheduling an appointment to meet any equine or livestock animal.
Equines (horses, donkeys, mules) make up the majority of livestock animals available. All equines are evaluated by professionals, and if training is needed, are placed into our training program. The majority of our equines are rescued by our Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit, and our staff and volunteers then rehabilitate and retrain them and find them new jobs and loving homes.
If you are interested in a particular equine, you can indicate this on your application. Otherwise, our staff can talk with you about a selection of equines that might fit your needs. Some of our horses have little to no experience under saddle, and others are very well trained. In addition to riding mounts, we usually have some sweet companion equines available.
We screen all equine and livestock adopters to ensure that the potential home will provide each animal with appropriate space, companionship, and care. Please read the requirements for adoption on the online application page to make sure your home or boarding stable qualifies.
We do not require a commitment to keep an equine for its entire life. However, we do partner with our adopters to help ensure that equines make successful transitions to new vocations and new homes if needed.
We recognize that horses may not stay with a single owner for their entire lives, but we offer lifetime support for our adopted horses and they are always welcome back with us. If an adopter chooses to rehome a horse on their own, we simply request that they share the new owner’s information, so that we can extend that support to any future owners.

If you are interested in adopting a livestock animal, please fill out a livestock adoption application.
Once your application is approved, our equine staff will contact you to schedule an appointment, or you may contact us at
214-461-1933. Appointments are required to ensure staff are available to help you decide which horse is the best fit for you.
