SPCA of Texas Relocates 55 Animals from Louisiana in Preparation for Hurricane Delta

(DALLAS, TX; McKINNEY, TX); October 9, 2020 – The SPCA of Texas teamed up with national animal welfare organizations, the Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to relocate 55 unowned pets from Louisiana on Thursday, October 8, in preparation for the imminent arrival of Hurricane Delta.

Thursday morning, the SPCA of Texas deployed a team to Louisiana at the request of the Humane Society of the United States to pick up 43 dogs available for adoption and in need of evacuation from Pointe Coupee Animal Shelter. The SPCA of Texas relocated these dogs to its Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center in Dallas.

On Thursday afternoon, the ASPCA transported 12 unowned dogs from Calcasieu Parish Animal Services to the SPCA of Texas' Russell H. Perry Animal Care Center in McKinney to provide relief to the shelter as it prepares for the impact of Hurricane Delta. This is in addition to seven dogs that were transported to the SPCA of Texas from Calcasieu Parish Animal Services on Saturday, October 3 and six animals that were relocated to the SPCA of Texas on Thursday, September 24, after SPCA of Texas responders spent a week on the ground in Lake Charles, La. helping provide care for animals at an emergency shelter operated by the ASPCA at the request of CPAS. A portion of their adoption center was severely damaged by Hurricane Laura, and now the shelter is preparing to experience potential further damage from Hurricane Delta.

The SPCA of Texas is proud to partner with national organizations and local animal welfare agencies to help animals impacted by the natural disasters Hurricane Laura and Hurricane Delta. The animals transferred to the SPCA of Texas will be cared for and evaluated for placement on a case-by-case basis.

"I'm absolutely in LOVE with Kitty (formerly Kaleigh). I know her name isn't original at all but I just started calling her that until I could think of a name and it just stuck - it's so her! I've attached two photos - she's seriously the most beautiful kitty in the world! She loves to steal tennis balls and bones from her dog sister - she thinks she's a dog! She enjoys going for walks and car rides, snuggling with mom, bird watching, drinking from the sink, playing with her pipe cleaners and getting into mom's makeup in the mornings. I couldn't 'imagine life without her. She's the absolute best!"
