SPCA of Texas and Henderson County Sheriff's Office Seize 48 Cruelly Treated, Medically Neglected Animals from Henderson County, Texas Property

(HENDERSON COUNTY, TX) - On Saturday June, 11, 2016, the SPCA of Texas and the Henderson County Sheriff's Office seized 48 dogs and puppies from a property near Payne Springs, TX. The SPCA of Texas' Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit took custody of 31 dogs and 17 puppies, and arrived at the SPCA of Texas’ Rescue Center, Empowered by PetSmart Charities Emergency Relief, the same afternoon, where the animals are receiving the veterinary care they urgently need.

The dogs were found outside the residence on the property in a fenced backyard, running in and out of the residence through holes in the side of the structure. They were living in their own feces and urine, and are suffering from health issues such as flea infestation, hair loss, eye discharge and severely overgrown nails.

After responding to a fire at the property on Thursday, June 9, authorities contacted the SPCA of Texas for assistance removing the dogs and puppies, as the animal’s conditions were not in compliance with Texas Health and Safety Code. On Saturday, June 11, the dog owner gave custody of the animals to the SPCA of Texas and the Henderson County Sheriff's office obtained a seizue warrant and served it that day.

Criminal charges may be pending under the authority of the Henderson County Sheriff's Office.

The SPCA of Texas will now focus on rehabilitating the dogs for adoption or placement on a case by case basis.

"I'm absolutely in LOVE with Kitty (formerly Kaleigh). I know her name isn't original at all but I just started calling her that until I could think of a name and it just stuck - it's so her! I've attached two photos - she's seriously the most beautiful kitty in the world! She loves to steal tennis balls and bones from her dog sister - she thinks she's a dog! She enjoys going for walks and car rides, snuggling with mom, bird watching, drinking from the sink, playing with her pipe cleaners and getting into mom's makeup in the mornings. I couldn't 'imagine life without her. She's the absolute best!"
