The animal shelter really rocks at night and Halloween rocked more than usual this year. As soon as the people left on Halloween Eve, the grown-up dogs and cats sprang into action decorating all the kennels and condos. We dressed in fantastic homemade costumes. My name may be Georgie Girl, but last weekend I was a very scary witch. At least, I thought I looked scary in my witch costume. The puppies and kittens just laughed though, when I gave my spookiest howl.
The adult dogs and cats had been gathering biscuits for days. We’d even cooked kibble in orange and black. It had all been safely hidden in our special closet. Now, it was my job to deliver the treats to each animal’s door. I trotted to the closet and pawed through boxes until I got to the ones stashed at the very back. As I tugged them out, I noticed that some felt too light. I opened them to check.
“Oh, no!” I yelped. Half our boxes were empty and soon it would be time for Trick-or-Treat!
I followed a trail of crumbs to the guilty animals. Those chow-hounds, Jake and Jazzi, were stretched out in the laundry room burping and moaning that their stomachs were too full. Their pal, Cookie Cat, was sprawled on the top of a clothes-dryer licking crumbs out of her fur. The three of them had eaten every one of the stolen goodies. I had to think fast or Halloween would be ruined.
“Attention!” I barked. “Follow me immediately or I’ll tell the puppies and kittens that you ate all their treats. Then I’ll have the big dogs throw you into the puppy room for the night.”
Jake, Jazzi, and Cookie rolled to their feet and cowered.
“Oh, Georgie Girl,” pleaded Jake. “Please, don’t tell.”
“We’re sorry,” yowled Cookie.
“I can’t stand the sound of sad puppies,” whimpered Jazzi.
“You’re going to fix this now, or else,” I said as I herded them to the office area.
When I left them a few minutes later, they were dialing the phones as fast as their paws could move. They were calling all our animal friends in the community nearby. I went to the front door to wait. It seemed like I paced for hours, but I know it was only a few minutes before I heard noise outside. I jerked open the door. Animals streamed in with bags, boxes and baskets. They said they’d gotten the word that the shelter was in need. Soon we had more treats then we knew what to do with. I had another idea---I invited all our friends to stay for the party after Trick-or-Treat. Wow! What a party that was. With happy puppies and kittens finally asleep, we partied till midnight. Not a morsel was left. Jake, Jazzi, and Cookie even volunteered to do all the clean-up.
Everyone called me a hero for my fast thinking. I told them the real heroes were all the terrific animals in the community who raced to the animal shelter to save Halloween.
If you want to be my personal hero, please come visit me in the SPCA animal shelter on Riverfront Boulevard in Dallas. I’d love to spend Thanksgiving in my new forever home with you.
