Importance of Posting Your Pet's Picture

When you have a lost pet it can be very difficult describing exactly how your pet looks. You should take pictures of your pet regularly.

Try to keep a picture of your pet available at all times.  It is important to visit the local shelters and organizations at least every 48 hours to see if your animal is there. Telephone information alone may not be sufficient to identify your animal. We urge you to visit the shelters and organizations in person to positively identify your animal. Bringing a current photo will help with identification. Your visit could help expedite a reunion with your pet, as animals often lose their collars and tags.

Posters

  • Make them GIANT (28" X 22") so that people driving by cannot miss them.
  • Use bright colors so the poster attracts the attention of everyone.
  • Put posters at major intersections near the location where you lost your pet (and in areas of sightings).
  • Keep them BRIEF and to the point.
  • Do Not Post Flyers That People Can't Read.
  • Do Not Use Thin Markers.

Post Your Posters Where They Will Be Seen

Post your posters on telephone or street light poles at busy street corners, especially at the major intersections nearest where your pet escaped or was last seen. Make sure they are as far above your head as possible for maximum visibility for drivers passing by. Use duct tape (on the back of the poster) to secure the poster to a post or pole.

Creating Flyers As Handouts And To Post

In addition to posters, you can also create flyers to hand out to neighbors and other locations such as veterinary offices, pet stores, groomers, supermarkets, etc. in your area.  A phone number should be noted as contact information.  Never include your home address.

CAUTION: Do NOT place your flyers inside mailboxes as this is a federal violation!
